A Heartfelt Ode to All Who Joined The Lute Watch

(Crossing, Zoluren: 156 Shorka 354)

This song is dedicated to all the brave souls of every Guild who came together in the sewers of the Crossing this spring in the effort to protect the Lute from falling into the hands of the Gorbesh.

Defenders of the Lute:
An ode, by Firannion Matrevyn

Within a hidden, hallowed room
We wait here singing in the gloom
And hear above the tramp of doom
   Defenders of the Lute

Where bloody hands would seize the Wren
Stand valiant maids and worthy men
Prepared to die, and die again
   Defenders of the Lute

About the city traitors go
Conspiring to placate the foe
Defiant heroes tell them, “No!”
   Defenders of the Lute

All in the sewer’s endless night
Join ranger, healer, bard and knight
Sworn comrades in one cause to fight
   Defenders of the Lute

The slaughtered halfling children’s wail
Arises over Arthe Dale
We know our vigil must not fail
   Defenders of the Lute

Like days of yore, when stilled was song
Our foe is pitiless and strong
Our hearts ache to avenge the wrong
   Defenders of the Lute

With faith that dread can ne’er exhaust
We shall stand firm, nor count the cost
For if it falls, then all is lost
   Defenders of the Lute

So may its purpose be fulfilled
This sacred heirloom of our guild
In every birth some blood is spilled
   Defenders of the Lute

If we survive, past hope and fear
We pledge to gather once a year
Recounting all that happened here
   Defenders of the Lute
